Your privacy matters. This site, www.davidhughes.org, collects as little information about you as possible, and what little it does collect stays on its own server. This policy explains what happens and why.
The site is run by David Hughes. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, use the Contact link in the footer of any page.
Analytics
The site uses Independent Analytics, a privacy-focused WordPress plugin, to understand which pages are read. It is built so that no personal data is collected or stored:
- Nothing leaves the server. Independent Analytics does not communicate with external servers. All processing happens within WordPress, on this site’s own hosting.
- No personal data is stored. Instead of recording your IP address, the plugin combines your IP with your browser’s User Agent and a secret salt token, then runs them through a one-way hash to create an anonymous visitor ID. The hash cannot be reversed back into your original details. A visitor ID looks like this:
0f267385cf696c7022d463f610a2c20c. An approximate location (such as country) is derived from the IP at the moment of the visit, but the IP itself is not kept. - No cookies. The plugin does not use cookies at all, which is why you won’t see a cookie banner on this site.
Because no personal data is stored and no cookies are set, this analytics does not require your consent. You can read more about how it works on the Independent Analytics GDPR page.
Caching
To load pages quickly, the site keeps temporary cached copies of its pages. These cache files are never accessed by any third party, except as necessary to provide technical support. The site may use QUIC.cloud to help with caching; their privacy policy explains how they handle data on their side.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site — particularly to books and products — are Amazon affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This means that if you follow one of these links and buy something, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Amazon may set its own cookies and collect its own data once you reach their site; this is covered by Amazon’s own privacy policy, not this one.
Embedded content from other sites
Pages on this site may include embedded content (for example videos or images hosted elsewhere). Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other site directly. These third-party sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content. This policy does not cover those services.
Children
This site is not directed at children, and does not knowingly collect any information from them.
Your rights
Because this site stores no personal data about you, there is normally nothing held that could identify you. Even so, under UK data protection law you have the right to ask what data is held about you, to have it corrected or erased, and to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if you believe your data has been mishandled. To make a request, use the Contact link in the footer.
