@Peter Urban - interesting point.

Although, I do feel that people of all levels of smartness would respond positively to being trusted and respected. I would hope that ultimately people would self-Police.

A little like when you join the Cadburys Chocolate factory you are allowed to eat as much chocolate as you like as they now you will just become either sick of it or just used to it being there and not take advantage.

(Just checked this page if FF 2.0.0.14 on my Mac and it's fine. What version are you using?)

I think it is definitely the right approach to trust your employees, to get out of the way and to honor their achievements. What usually isn't mentioned in this context though is that hiring smart is an absolute must to make this approach a success. Not all people are driven and are able to self manage and there even might be some that take advantage of 'to much' freedom (that is too much for them). Your job as an entrepreneur is to identify the ones that blossom in an 'open' environment. I don't think it is clear to most businesses - especially outside the software / new media industries - what that means in terms of effort that has to go into the job profiling, screening and hiring process. In other words, the lazy man's hiring process turns into the manager's treadmill.

By the way, your comment submission filed shows unreadable small font on my FF/Mac combo, so I am flying kind of blind here...

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your kind offer! I'm at FOWD this week so if I don't see you there it would be great to meet up next time I'm in Bath - one of my favourite cities.

Thanks

Hey David,

Thanks for the amazing write-up. I'm honored! It's so cool to know that we're encouraging people to give their Teams the credit they're due.

Please give us a shout if you're ever in Bath or Bristol!

All the best,
Ryan
